Aasha Marie is a Chicago Hip Hop artist, poet, and speaker. Born and bred in Chicago’s south side neighborhood of Englewood, she started like most artists – in the church. Her father pastored a small congregation of a storefront Baptist church in Englewood. Loud organ blasts, rumbling voices of choirs and the boom of the drums filled her childhood. Of course other musical influences infiltrated her living room while her mother cleaned: Toni Braxton, Anita Baker and Patsy Cline. Hip hop was introduced through first cousins and grade school hallways, everything from LL Cool J, Ice Cube, Notorious B.I.G., to Tupac, Jay-Z, and Nas. Though all these musical influences have shaped her musically, the initial interest in emceeing stemmed from her younger brother who started making beats on his computer and having cyphers with neighborhood friends. Often times they were all gathered around radio speakers, dissecting hip hop albums and crafting rhymes where Aasha found her niche. A gifted songwriter, musician, poet and emcee, she looks forward to sharing her gift with the world through music. In 2013, she was recognized by the Wade-O Radio Show, an international internet radio show, as an “Artist on the Come Up” for Chicago’s christian hip hop music scene. As a budding performer, she has opened for recording artists such as Mishon (actor/singer from former ABC Network’s “Lincoln Heights” TV series), Silento, (Whip/Nae Nae dance song), Wale, and has even shared the stage with Christian hip hop artists such as This’l, J’Son and Tony Tillman. Breaking Obscurity EP released digitally in June 2014 is her first solo effort as a Christian music artist hoping to jump start her career in the music industry. The project explores the woes of the Englewood community she grew up in and loves, the deceitful “escapes” i.e. sins of the neighborhood and bigger world surrounding her, and the redemption that Christ brings which breaks obscurity, turning our focus away from the world and fixing our eyes on Jesus. Aside from music, she hosts an internet radio show called “Off the Record” and serves at her local church, New Life Community, alongside her loving husband Justin.
